Above The Court: Anthony Lee
When people see Anthony Lee, they get the perception that he is just a
basketball player, but he is more than what he is perceived to be. He is a public
speaker, music artist and most importantly, a man of strong Christian beliefs as
well. All of these talents and interests are connected by his faith to create his
More Than movement. This movement was created by Lee’s ambition to inspire
others to be more than the status quo and to use their platform to help those
around them.
Even though Lee grew up in a strong Christian home, it still took time and
experience for him to grow himself and the More Than brand. Once Lee was living
on his own at Temple University, he could start truly applying his faith and all the
knowledge he learned from a young age. He realized “when you’re under your
parent’s nest, they shield you away from a lot of things, and you don’t get a taste
of the real world.” When Lee experienced the real world, he knew it would be
difficult to find others who shared his same life philosophy. Being a basketball
player at Temple and Ohio State, his faith made him stand out among his
teammates. Lee was aware he needed to find like-minded people to surround
himself with to fight the challenges and tests that were thrown his way. These
challenges all had a purpose in helping Lee grow in his faith and his relationship
with God.
Enduring the trials and tribulations that came along with college life had
many rewards for Lee. On December 22nd, 2012, Lee had one of the biggest
games of his collegiate career in an upset against Syracuse University. He
described it as his “coming out party” which brought his name into the limelight.
Lee knew he had to take advantage of this platform that God had provided for
him. It was his opportunity to “show them that I didn’t get here on my own; it was
God who really opened up the door.” He continues to carry on this message by
embracing community projects and establishing the More Than brand. One of the
biggest projects that he is involved in is his very own More Than basketball
camp, where the children not only learn basketball skills, but learn to look beyond
basketball and realize their full potential and the impact that they can have on
others. Lee is very grateful to have this platform where he can give back, help
others, and bring glory to God.
Having played at Temple, Ohio State, and now professionally overseas, Lee
is aware of the great God-given ability of basketball that he has been blessed with;
but he is also aware that God created him to be more than a basketball player. He
believes he was created to bring glory to God while helping others – this belief fully
encompasses the More Than movement and its mission. Lee strives to be an
ambassador for the youth and his peers in teaching them how to display their own
God-given talents to impact others. Lee hopes to spread this message and to
make an impact on as many people as he can with his More Than movement.
