Competition > Controversy
When UCF star quarterback Mackenzie Milton was injured last season during the USF game, Dariel Mack Jr. stepped in to help close out the season as AAC Champions. Looking forward, although the QB depth chart would include Hayden Kingston, Quadry Jones, & incoming freshman Dillon Gabriel, at that point there was little fan speculation as to who would be leading the offense going into the Spring game & further into the 2019 season. Then came the announcement that Notre Dame grad transfer, Brandon Wimbush, would be joining the ranks. A collegiate veteran QB with 16 starts and a 13-3 record, Wimbush’s announcement immediatelty sparked the conversation of a QB controversy. All eyes became focused on what the Spring game would reveal and it revealed a lot. It revealed that UCF’s QB talent pool is deep and there would not be a clear cut QB1. Mack, Wimbush, Jones, & Gabriel all performed similarly, however, in the fans eyes, the majority of them still felt Mack would get the nod. Then, Mack goes down with an injury and the controversy went into full effect.
The reality tho is there never was a controversy. In society, the word “controversy” just sounds better and lasts longer. This is sports. At the core of sports is a healthy, competitve environment to elevate each others abilities to determine which player or team has the edge. Through it all, bonds were bulit and it was determined that Wimbush had an edge. That is not to slight Gabriel or Jones at all, but rather further proves how good they really are and how deep the UCF QB corp is.
UCF Football fans, are you ready?
They definitely are!
