Geico High School Basketball Nationals Returns in 2021

As was the case with many sporting events in 2020, the Geico High School Basketball Nationals was cancelled due to COVID 19.

The crowning high school basketball tournament will return in 2021 but at a new venue and an expanded field to 10 teams from 8 in prior years. Due to ongoing COVID 19 state restrictions this years event will take place at Suncoast Credit Union Arena, Ft Meyers on March 31 – April 3, 2021. Previously, the tournament was hosted at Christ The King High School in New York. Tickets will not be sold to the event.

Although the 2021 team brackets have yet to be announced, Montverde Academy, Sunrise Christian, IMG Academy, & AZ Compass should all be auto bids.

Some potential bubble teams include Milton, Oak Hill, Duncanville, Wasatch Academy, Prolific Prep, La Lumiere, Pace Academy, Dematha, & Minnehaha

Girls side – Lake Highland Prep & Westlake should be auto bids. After those two, a solid argument can be made for any of these teams to get in, including Montverde Academy, New Hope Academy, St John’s College, Fremont, St Paul’s VI, Winston-Salem Christian National, Mount Notre Dame, Desoto (TX), American Heritage, & Waukee.

The cancellation of the 2020 GEICO Nationals was disappointing in numerous ways but many were looking forward to seeing if Montverde Academy would go wire to wire as undefeated National Champions. The 2020 Montverde Academy team was deemed by scores of basketball heads & media as the best high school basketball team of all time. Even with the event cancelled last year, Montverde was titled as national champions.

In 2019, the last time the tournament was played, IMG Academy (FL) defeated La Lumiere (IN) in the boys division. On the girls side, New Hope Academy (MD) defeated St. John’s College (D.C.)

Tournament History

The National High School Invitational (NHSI) launched in 2009 at Georgetown Prep in Bethesda, MD. The event was created by Paragon Marketing Group to provide a season-ending platform for top, nationally-ranked high school basketball teams to compete against one another in a season-ending tournament. In 2014 the event moved to New York City and was named the DICK’S Sporting Goods High School Nationals. In 2018 the event became the GEICO High School Basketball Nationals.
