The Gus Bus’s First Stop In The Bounce House
The UCF Football team took to The Bounce House on Saturday for their first spring scrimmage in which the public was able to attend. Fans entered the stadium with an eagerness to get an early glimpse of their new look Knights.
The scrimmage started first with a session of live field goals and field goal blocks. The scrimmage itself was a full 11 vs 11 with live tackling on all ball carriers including all quarterbacks except for Dillon Gabriel.
Monitored closely from the field behind the running backs, new head coach Gus Malzahn communicated the offensive plays while evaluating all of the execution and individual player performances. As to be expected, there were some miscues, missed assignments, pass drops, and fumbles; however, they were not in excess. Despite the newness of the coaching changes and system integrations, the team still moved with a great deal of fluidity, pace, and enthusiasm.
The biggest take away from the day was not from the scrimmage itself or the fan support. More impressive was the number of high school recruits and coaches that were in attendance including some of the top recruits in the southeast. Their attendance supported the resonating buzz within the high school recruiting circles that quickly developed soon after the announcement of Malzahn’s hire.
Looking ahead, UCF will hold their second public scrimmage of the spring next Saturday before closing out their spring season with the Spring Game on April 10.
