UCF Football’s Second Spring Scrimmage Offers Up More of Their Future Look
In consecutive weekends, the UCF Football team took to The Bounce House for an open to the public spring scrimmage.
While the first scrimmage last weekend more resembled 11 vs 11 football, today’s scrimmage was definitely designed to be more game situational. Rather than have the offense just start on one end of the field and run plays to push down field, Coach Malzahn set up specific game situations for the team to execute within. “We went third and three, third and five, third and seven, third and nine.” Other situations included starting at the 50 yard line, just outside the red zone, and even from their own goal line.
Once again, Coach Malzahn monitored action closely from the field a few yards behind the running backs. “Each practice we’ve gotten better,” he stated in the post scrimmage interview. “Like I said last week, the whole key to this spring is the know the foundation, offensively, defensively, and special teams…I think we’re in a good spot with that so far. Overall, I thought we got better from last Saturday.”
As to be expected with most scrimmages, there were not any major takeaways from the scrimmage itself. It is to be noted once again that there was a solid number of high school recruits and coaches in attendance, even more than last week’s scrimmage. Numerous top recruits in the southeast could be seen lining the fence railings paying close attention to the scrimmage flow and plays. Many had taken to social media during the week announcing their attendance – something that rarely took place for a spring scrimmage. This type of recruiting attention within such an early coaching tenure could be a huge indicator of what is to come for “The Future of College Football.”
UCF will hold hold final practices this week before closing out their spring season with the Spring Game on April 10.
