USC Outlasts FGCU in ‘Dunk City’ Reunion Game
In 2013, head coach, Andy Enfield led Florida Gulf Coast to an Atlantic Sun conference title, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The Eagles were seeded No. 15 in the South Region and faced off against No. 2 seeded Georgetown. FGCU took down Georgetown 78-68, then preceded to pull off another upset against San Diego State, becoming the first No. 15 seed to reach the Sweet 16. As FGCU captivated the country, they became one of the most beloved Cinderella stories in sports, and Dunk City was born.
Fast forward to 2021, and Andy Enfield is entering is 9th year as the head coach of USC. Enfield returned to Fort Meyers on Tuesday to coach his first game in Alico Arena since his departure from FGCU following the 2013 season.
FGCU and USC traded blows early in the game, with the Eagles taking a five point lead about halfway through the first half. The Trojans stayed consistent shooting the ball, hitting nearly 50% from the field and 41% from behind the arc. USC went on a 12-2 run late in the second half and never looked back. In Enfield’s return to Dunk City, USC outlasted FGCU by a score of 78-61.
Junior guard, Cyrus Largie led the way offensively for the Eagles, finishing the game with 20 points. USC had a great all around game, with four out of five starters scoring in double figures and two near double-doubles from Junior forward, Isaiah Mobley, and junior guard, Boogie Ellis. Senior forward, Chevez Goodwin, led the Trojans in scoring with 20 points.
