UCF Announces Ole Miss Transfer John Rhys Plumlee as Starting Quarterback
Gus Malzahn has named senior, John Rhys Plumlee, the starting quarterback for the Knights going into the 2022 season. Plumlee, the Ole Miss transfer, had been in competition with sophomore quarterback, Mikey Keene, throughout spring and fall camp.
Plumlee arrived at UCF after transferring from Ole Miss, following their 2021 season. Plumlee made great contributions in the run game at his time at Ole Miss, as he broke the Ole Miss freshman rushing record, with 1,023 yards. He tallied 12 rushing touchdowns in his freshman season as well, making him a great potential dual threat option for the Knights.
Throughout camp, Malzahn and his staff have continually reiterated how close this quarterback competition has been. Malzahn believes he is able to win with both Plumlee and Keene, and stated that this is “not an easy decision.”
Heading into the 2022 season, the Knights’ quarterback room is full of talent between Plumlee, Keene, and true freshman Thomas Castellanos. With the talent in the QB room and new offensive coordinator, Chip Lindsey, this UCF offense has more than enough support to have a successful 2022 season.
