Miami Hurricanes Defense Proves Stout While Offense Starts Slow In Win Over Southern Miss 30 -7
The 15th ranked Miami Hurricanes hosted the Southern Miss Eagles on Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium for their week 2 matchup in college football.
After a week 1 70 -13 tune up beating of Bethune Cookman College 70, the Hurricanes looked to improve in some areas. Offensively, the looked to refine their assignments and efficiency while remaining run/pass balanced. Defensively, their goal was to tighten up on missed tackles, assignments, & communicate more effectively.
Miami’s offense looked out of sync and it was evident from the opening drive. The Canes went 3 and out gaining only 4 yards. Although their second drive went 14 plays and 68 yards, they could not punch it in for a touchdown and had to settle for a 30 yard field goal from Andres Borregales. Miami’s offensive woes continued for the majority of the first half going scoreless until Henry Parrish Jr punched it in for a 1 yard touchdown with 20 seconds left in half.
After halftime, the Hurricanes offense came out hot scoring 2 touchdowns in just over 2 minutes. However, they would not find the end zone for the remainder of the game. The final Miami points came from the foot of Borregales adding 2 field goals from 33 and 40 yards out.
Defensively, Miami was clicking on all cylinders. Aside from giving up a 32 yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter, the ‘Canes defense looked nearly impenetrable all game. They only allowed 24 yards rushing(16 in the first quarter) and 207 passing. Linebacker Corey Flagg led the team with 6 tackles with teammates Jacob Lichtenstein, Leonard Taylor, & Nyjalik Kelly each recording a sack and Tyrique Stevenson with an interception.
Although they all stated in the post game conference that they were not looking ahead to next week’s matchup at Texas A&M, the Miami staff and players acknowledged they need to play better offensively next week in order to get the win.
Looking ahead, Miami will face their toughest opponent of the season thus far in Texas A&M away on Saturday, September 17 at loud & hostile Kyle Field in College Station, TX with kickoff at 9 p.m on ESPN. Previously 24th ranked Texas A&M will look to avenge a tough 14-17 loss at home versus a talented Appalachian State team.
Southern Miss will look to bounce back against Northwestern State at home on Saturday, September 10 with a 6 p.m. kickoff. Both teams will be looking to pick up their first win of the 2022 season.
