Miami Loses In-State Rivalry Against FSU
The highly anticipated bragging rights game between Miami and Florida State took place on Saturday night at Hard Rock Stadium. The Hurricanes lost in disappointing fashion, losing by 42 points to FSU, with a final score of 3-45.
Miami struggled on both sides of the ball throughout the game, and were completely shutout after the 1st quarter. The Hurricanes’ offense amounted 188 total yards, while the defense gave up 454 total yards. Miami also lost the turnover battle handily, giving up 4 turnovers, while only creating 1 turnover.
The Hurricanes rotated quarterbacks throughout the game, starting with Tyler Van Dyke, who left the game in the 1st half with an injury and did not return in the 2nd half. Jake Garcia and Jacurri Brown shared the majority of the snaps, but both quarterbacks struggled to gain any offensive momentum. Brown threw for 37 yards and an interception, while completing 5 of 9 pass attempts, while Garcia threw for 1 yard and an interception, completing 1 of 2 pass attempts.
Miami ran for a total of 126 yards, with the majority of the success that the Hurricanes saw in the run game coming from Jaylan Knighton and Jacurri Brown. Knighton ran for 60 yards on four carries, while Brown ran for 54 yards on 14 carries.
Miami’s defense struggled to stop the Seminoles’ offense, allowing FSU to score on 6 of their 11 possessions. The Hurricanes gave up 225 passing yards and 229 rushing yards. FSU’s junior quarterback, Jordan Travis, had a solid game, tying his career-high for touchdown passes as he threw for 202 yards, 3 touchdowns, an interception, and completed 10 of 12 pass attempts.
There doesn’t appear to be many positive takeaways from this game for the Hurricanes, but sophomore kicker, Andres Borregales, nailed a 49 yard field gaol, his season long.
Postgame, Cristobal stated, “We’re in a building process and we’re laying a foundation. We got to go to work and it isn’t fun. Days like this are really painful. There’s no excuse, there is no side-stepping it or sugarcoating it. That’s why I came here. We got to go to work.”
