Miami Takes Down No. 1 Seed Houston; Advances to Elite Eight in Back To Back Years
Miami faced No. 1 seeded Houston in Kansas City for a Sweet Sixteen matchup on Friday night. The fifth seeded Hurricanes took down Houston, knocking out the last remaining No. 1 seed.
With Miami’s win over Houston, the tournament is left without a No. 1 seed in the Elite Eight for the first time since seeding began in 1979.
Miami played a terrific game on the offensive end during their 89-75 victory, becoming only the fifth team to score at least 70 points against Houston this season. The Hurricanes shot 51.7% from the field, 44% from three, and 84.2% from the free throw line. Miami limited their turnovers, giving the ball away only 6 times throughout the game.
The Hurricanes stifled Houston’s offense, with the Cougars only shooting 37.5% from the field and 29% from three.
All five of Miami’s starters scored in double figures, with Nigel Pack leading the way, scoring 26 points. Pack shot 8-12 from the field and 7-10 from three. ACC Player of the Year, Isaiah Wong scored 20 points, while Norchad Omier recored another double-double, putting up 12 points and 13 rebounds.
With the win, Jim Larranaga leads Miami to back-to-back Elite Eight appearances. The Hurricanes will face No. 2 seeded Texas on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. (ET), with the opportunity to reach the Final Four for the first time in the school’s history.
