Big 12 Approves Addition of Arizona, Arizona State, and Utah
The Big 12 continues the league’s expansion, with the school’s voting to add Arizona on Thursday and Arizona State and Utah on Friday night. This comes after fellow PAC-12 member, Colorado announced they’d be joining the Big 12 last week.
All four schools will be officially joining the conference for the 2024-2025 season, bringing the league to a total of 16 schools.
Friday was a chaotic day for the college football landscape, as Oregon and Washington announced they’d be leaving the PAC-12 to join the Big Ten. This leaves the PAC-12 with only four members, Cal, Oregon State, Stanford, and Washington State.
The mass exodus from the PAC-12 is largely due to lack of a financially competitive T.V. deal. The conference’s streaming deal with Apple was seemingly not enough to entice members to keep the league intact.
With the addition of the new members, the Big 12 stays competitive with the remaining large conferences. Their soon-to-be 16 team conference will be the same size as the SEC, two less than the Big Ten at 18 schools, and two more than the ACC with 14 schools.
